Tryout dates and times are subject to course availability at Tustin Ranch Golf Club and are always subject to change. When updated, dates and times can be found here, or, on the Athletics page at the Beckman High website. Note that all physical clearances should be completed prior to trying out see the Athletics page for details.
Range balls will be provided for any range session tryouts. On-course tryouts are contingent upon course availability. Golf course appropriate attire is required as are your own clubs.
Tryout Update/Changes for 2025
Due to athletics now being considered an elective, a separate PE class is required for graduation. To accommodate this, tryouts will be held for both the girls and boys teams concurrently:
Summer Tryout
Early Fall Tryout
At the end of any of these tryout sessions, prospective athletes may be added to the team, cut, or deferred to a following tryout date at the discretion of the coaches. Official junior tournament scores can be used to show ability (please see the "Links" section for acceptable junior tours).
Prospective athletes are encouraged to sign up for the summer online PE classes in order to satisfy graduation requirements and minimize schedule conflicts. Please contact your school counselor to start this process ASAP.
If there are any time conflicts, please contact Coach Blair immediately.
Golf is a cut sport. Teams typically hold 7-8 players on Varsity and JV depending on level of golfers who tryout. No guarantee that there will be a JV team. Coaches decide who makes the team. Decisions about who makes the team include but are not limited to: 1. Academic eligibility, 2. School attendance record, 3. Golf Skills, 4. Behavior and character, 5. Potential to make/contribute to Varsity.
While range sessions are mandatory, the coaches may decide that a follow-up on-course tryout is or is not needed on a case-by-case basis. Junior tournament scores are always considered in this process. To be valid, the scores must be from officially sanctioned junior tournaments (AJGA, Junior PGA organizations, state programs, etc.) and must be shared with coaches from that organizations website or publication (ex: online tournament leaderboard, athlete profile).
If a prospective athlete makes the team from one of these tryouts, they will need to work with their counselor to add 6th period golf to their schedule. There will be a program meeting in the first week of the school year to discuss in- and off-season expectations.
Is golf a cut sport?
Yes. Space is limited on both JV and Varsity squads. Unfortunately we cannot open the team to all ability levels.
How can my student athlete prepare for tryouts?
Lessons, weekly practice, practice rounds, and junior tour events are the best preparation for trying out for the golf teams.
What does it take to make the Varsity squad?
A typical Varsity score will range from under par to under 40 for 9-holes. JV scores typically range from 40 to 45. One of the best ways to prepare for the competitive aspect is to participate in Southern California junior tournaments (AJGA, Toyota Tour Cup, Futures Tour, etc). Varsity players are expected to compete on a regular basis during the off-season. The best way to think of the varsity team is that it is an AP Athletics class.
Where does Beckman typically practice/play?
Practices for both levels are held on a daily basis (in season) at Tustin Ranch GC. Home match competitions for the Varsity squad are held at Tustin Ranch while JV matches are held at Riverview GC.
Does Golf take the place of a PE class?
Athletics at Beckman are an elective class. This means that a PE course must be completed to satisfy graduation requirements. Contact your counselor to discuss what options are available.
Is there a Summer Camp?
There are no mandatory camps or events. Athletes are instead encouraged to take lessons and compete in junior tournaments to develop competition experience.
